021 in one sentence

021 is the oldest and most common New Zealand mobile prefix. The full 021 range (0210 through 0219) is allocated by the NAD register to One NZ (formerly Vodafone NZ). Because New Zealand has full mobile number portability, any individual 021 number may now be on Spark, 2degrees, or another carrier.

About the 021 mobile prefix

021 is the foundational New Zealand mobile prefix. It launched in 1993 with Bell South New Zealand — the country's first GSM mobile network — and was carried over when Bell South was acquired by Vodafone Group plc in 1998. Vodafone New Zealand operated the 021 range continuously until it rebranded to One NZ on 31 March 2023.

Originally, 021 numbers were 8 digits long, then 9 digits, before standardising at 10 digits (021 XXX XXXX) under the NAD allocation rules introduced in 2008. Legacy 021 numbers issued before those rules can still be 8 or 9 digits — they remain valid and are routed correctly by the network.

Since New Zealand introduced full mobile number portability via the IPMS in 2007, 021 numbers have been highly portable. A significant percentage of 021 numbers in active use today have been ported away from their original One NZ allocation — most often to Spark, but also to 2degrees. This makes the prefix itself an unreliable indicator of the current carrier; always check the live IPMS data before assuming.

021 Number FAQ

What carrier is a 021 number?

021 was originally allocated to One NZ (formerly Vodafone NZ). The full 021 range — 0210 through 0219 — is held by One NZ on the NAD register. Individual numbers may have been ported to Spark or 2degrees; use the lookup form above to check the current carrier.

Is 021 a Vodafone or One NZ number?

Both — they are the same company. Vodafone New Zealand rebranded to One NZ on 31 March 2023. The 021 range, network, and SMPP carrier identifier (VFNZ) remained unchanged.

How long is a 021 number?

Most 021 numbers are 10 digits (021 XXX XXXX). Some older 021 numbers are 8 or 9 digits — those are legacy allocations from before 2008 and remain valid.

Can a 021 number be on Spark?

Yes. Since 2007, NZ mobile numbers are fully portable between Spark, One NZ, 2degrees and other carriers. A 021 number that started on Vodafone can now be on Spark, 2degrees, or any licenced operator. The prefix alone doesn't tell you the current carrier.

How do I send a text to a 021 number?

Sign up to WebSMS, top up your account, and send. We automatically route each message via the correct carrier (direct One NZ for non-ported 021s, direct Spark or 2degrees for ported-away numbers). More on SMS to One NZ →
