About Spark NZ
Spark NZ (formerly Telecom New Zealand until 2014) is the country's largest mobile network operator, serving roughly 40% of NZ mobile subscribers. Spark operates the 027 prefix as its primary mobile range — 0274 in particular is one of the oldest and most recognisable NZ mobile prefixes, dating back to the original TelstraClear and Telecom mobile launches.
Skinny Mobile is Spark's prepaid sub-brand, launched in 2012, and operates on the same physical Spark network. Skinny numbers use the 0204 prefix and any SMS sent to a Skinny number is delivered via the same direct Spark SMPP route at the same per-message price.
Because New Zealand has full mobile number portability via the IPMS, individual Spark numbers may have been ported to One NZ, 2degrees, or another operator. WebSMS queries the IPMS in real time on every message so messages always reach the current carrier — you don't need to know whether the recipient has switched networks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which prefixes belong to Spark NZ?
Spark holds 0271-0279 (full 027 range), 0204 (Skinny Mobile), 0240, and the 026 legacy blocks 0261-0264 and 0268-0269. See the table above for the full NAD-sourced list.
How much does it cost to SMS a Spark number?
From 8c per message at volume, 8.5c standard. No setup fees, no monthly subscription, no contracts. See full pricing.
Does WebSMS connect directly to Spark NZ?
Yes — direct SMPP route, not an aggregator. This gives real-time delivery receipts (DLRs) and lower end-to-end latency than re-sellers.
What if the recipient has ported away from Spark?
Every message is checked against the live IPMS register before sending. If a 027 number has been ported to 2degrees or One NZ, WebSMS automatically routes it to the correct carrier — no extra configuration needed. Try the portability checker.
Can I send to Skinny Mobile numbers?
Yes. Skinny (0204) runs on the Spark network and is delivered via the same direct route at the same price.
